Zebrafish Images

The IZFS recently ran a zebrafish image competition, with almost 20 submissions. One of these images is presented above, titled ‘Glowing Fish’ and was captured by Marko Pende (Postdoctoral Fellow at MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA). Here, sthe adult fish is glowing after the injection of 70kD 564 Dextran injected into the heart providing a detailed view of the vasculature supplying the gills and the brain. This image highlights the aptitude with which Marko can clear tissues for microscopy. This feat is extremely difficult given the size and depth of tissue of an adult zebrafish. Marko also has a lot of experience using custom built light-sheet microscopes. Combining these approaches, he can provide a beautifully clear, comprehensive and in-depth microscopy image. Marko has applied these techniques to many organisms including axolotyl, zebrafish and Drosophila.
